Family Based Treatment (FBT) is considered to be the first-line treatment for youth diagnosed with restrictive eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa given considerable research evidence. FBT is also commonly employed among patients with atypical anorexia nervosa given overlap in symptoms and severity. Dr. Kramer discusses potential modifications of FBT and important clinical considerations for providing FBT to youth with atypical anorexia nervosa with a lens on reducing weight stigma/bias, improving detection of eating disorder symptomology, and enhancing care coordination.
JHSP ARTICLE: Treating Youth Obesity: Review and Application of APA Practice Guidelines

Youth obesity is an epidemic in the U.S. today, after five decades of increasing weight gains. The APA recently released clinical practice guidelines related to youth obesity to help inform and guide practitioners, based on available research evidence. The primary overarching recommendation is family-based multicomponent behavioral intervention of at least 26 hours in duration.
